When Austrias biggest ice climbing park “Eispark Osttirol” asked us whether we want to join one of their guides for a videoshoot for the Eispark, we didn`t think twice. 🙂
With Maggy only having a little bit of experience and Anja being an absolute Newbie in this field of climbing, we thought this gonna be a good preparation for our glacier tours and the Seven European Summits this year!

Nationalpark Hohe Tauern
The Eispark Osttirol is located in the beautiful Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, more precisely in the “Matreier Tauerntal”. Starting point for all activities going on in the Eispark is the parking lot of the Matreier Tauernhaus, a pretty located alpine hotel where they serve excellent food and have nice cosy rooms for multi-daystays.
First steps of Ice Climbing…
After getting to know our guide Matthias from the Kalser mountain guides, we made a quick gear check and put on our crampons. We first trained the techniques to use the crampons and ice axes and tried some traverses as well as safety skills.
Killing the Big Wall 🙂
After a short time we already felt quite comfortable and started to climb higher and harder routes. We even tried some overhangs and dihedrals.
We were lucky with the weather and had the perfect conditions – it was not too cold and for a short time thesun was out!
We loved it sooooo much and could have climbed for hours, but at some point our underarms quitted their job. 🙂
Overall it was a great experience and we will definitely come back. Ice Climbing is great as a change to climbing and bouldering halls in winter and it is mostly fresh air and in the mountains. 🙂 Make sure you have a guide if you are beginners and always stay safe. And now…try it!
